sea or lake
Salt Sea
- Today Dead Sea

In ancient writers
- Pliny the Elder, Natural History 5.71–73 — The Jordan is swallowed by Asphaltites, a gloomy lake over 100 miles long where the bodies of bulls and camels float; Machaerus overlooks it from the south, and to the west live the Essenes, a people without women or money.
- Josephus, Jewish War 4.476–477 — Lake Asphaltitis is bitter and barren and bears up the heaviest things thrown into it; Vespasian tested this by having non-swimmers thrown in with their hands tied, and they all floated.
- Tacitus, Histories 5.6 — The Jordan is lost in a vast lake like a sea but nauseous to taste, that no wind can stir and no fish or water-bird inhabits; it bears up whatever is thrown on it, and at a certain season throws up bitumen.
